Our Story

Rooted in tradition, born in fire.

Legado X is a mezcal born from the highlands of Oaxaca...where agave grows slow, smoke runs deep, and every bottle carries a legacy built across generations.

What We Stand For

Three principles. One mezcal.

Tradición

Every step honours the techniques passed down through generations of Zapotec maestros palenqueros. Nothing is industrialised, nothing is rushed.

Terruño

Our agave grows in the highland soils of Oaxaca, where altitude, mineral-rich earth, and native airborne yeast define the character of every single batch.

Tiempo

Great mezcal cannot be fabricated on demand. We allow our agave a minimum of eight years in the ground before the first harvest even begins.

The Origin

I am a fourth-generation mezcalero, inheriting not only the craft but the passion and dedication that have been passed down through the lol generations. My great-grandfather began this journey in Oaxaca, the birthplace of mezcal, and his legacy was carried on by my grandfather and my parents.

Together, my mother and father perfected our family’s mezcal recipe, a true labor of love and tradition. For them, mezcal wasn’t just a drink;it was a way of life, a testament to our family’s values of hard work, perseverance, and unity.

My father had a dream of bringing our mezcal to the United States, sharing our family’s story and the spirit of Oaxaca with the world. But this dream was met with immense challenges. Living in Mexico and not being citizens made it difficult for my parents to travel freely and expand the business as they wished. Their hands were tied by borders, and the dream my father held so dearly remained just out of reach.

Then, in 2020, the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. This not only affected our family personally but also had a profound impact on the mezcal industry as a whole. In Mexico, government operations slowed to a crawl, halting many of the processes my father needed to move forward with his plans. The pandemic brought the industry to a near standstill, with many artisanal mezcal producers struggling to keep their businesses alive. The impact on trade, production, and tourism was severe, and for smaller, traditional producers like my family, it became a time of uncertainty and hardship.

Tragically, it was during this difficult time that I lost my father to COVID-19. His passing was a devastating blow to our family, but it also strengthened my resolve. I couldn’t let his dream die with him. That’s why I created Legado X, to continue the journey my father began and to ensure his legacy, and that of my ancestors, lived on. Legado means “legacy” in Spanish;a word that holds deep meaning for me. It symbolizes everything my family has worked for across four
generations. The X represents the unknown, much like a variable in mathematics, symbolizing the endless possibilities of
what we can build for the future.

Our mezcal is a celebration of heritage and the legacy that we continue to shape. What makes our mezcal truly special is the traditional, artisanal process behind it;a process that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Mezcal-making in Oaxaca is not a quick or easy task. It is a labor of love, an art form passed down through the hands of master mezcaleros.

I’ve had the privilege of working on this process from start to finish, alongside the amazing team we have in Mexico. Many of them are multi-generational mezcaleros who bring their expertise, honed through decades of experience, to recreate my father’s work. It’s hard work; physically demanding and time-consuming; but the results are worth every drop of sweat. There is something magical about the transformation of the raw agave into a spirit that carries with it the essence of Oaxaca and the hands that crafted it.

Oaxaca itself plays a vital role in the mezcal we create. This region, with its unique climate and rich cultural history, is the heart of mezcal production. The land, the people, and the traditions come together to create something that is more than just a drink, it is a reflection of a way of life. Mezcal is the soul of Oaxaca, and through Legado X, we bring that soul to the world.

Though my father did not live to see his dream come true, I am determined to carry it forward. Alongside my younger brother, I continue the work he started, ensuring that every bottle of Legado X not only honors our past but also looks to the future. We are proud to bring our family’s legacy to life in each bottle, sharing our story and the spirit of Oaxaca with every sip.

Legado X is a tribute to my father’s memory, a testament to the generations that came before us, and a celebration of the legacies we all strive to leave behind. When you enjoy Legado X, you are participating in a story, one built on dreams, hard work, and the unwavering pursuit of a legacy.
